After graduating from the University of Colorado, I lived in Mexico City for 7 years teaching English and managing a Berlitz type language school. After marrying, I moved back to the U.S. and became the "stay-at-home mom" for 16 years, taking a career break. I loved every minute of raising my 2 kids, doing cub scouts, PTA, etc, but needed to return to work in 1986 after my husband experienced serious health issues and a corporate layoff situation.
I did not know what I wanted to do (or could do) and did not have any of the tech skills required for a business career; so I went to the UCI Women's Opportunity Center (WOC) and took career assessments, counseling and workshops. I was able to secure a part time administrative position while I continued to study at the WOC and elsewhere. I had an excellent boss who encouraged me, and within 4 years I was the Western Region HR Manager at a national managed health care company.
I spent the last 10 years of my corporate life at Allergan, including 5 years as head of employment for their 2000+ employee corporate headquarters ($4b+ business). I am now semi-retired and have established a part-time consulting practice in Human Resources, as well as working on several non-profit boards and committees.
